The Centre for Just Peace and Democracy (CJPD) was founded in 2004 to formalise pre-existing networks of activists and academics in the Tamil diaspora and beyond who have worked to bring about a just peace in Sri Lanka. In 2007, with the support of the Berghof Foundation and the Norwegian Government, this network was given an intuitional form and a hub in Switzerland.
The founding group of Anton Ponrajah, Nadesan Satyendra, Alphonse Tarcisius and Nadarajah Elango were joined by Ana Pararajasingham, Prasanna Chandrakumar and David Demani in March 2007 as CJPD moved into its new home in Lucerene.
Since then the management team have taken on a heavy workload combining intuition-building and project work. Highlights include:

» International seminar - 'Humanitarian Action in the Undeclared War in Sri Lanka',
» Project - Resistance/Liberation Movements and Transitions to Politics: Building a Network of Experience,
» Project planning workshop – 'Engaging Tamil Diaspora: Diaspora Dialogues for Development and Peace
» Planning workshop- Women, Gender and CJPD'.
» Development of funding proposal, project proposals and publicity material,
» Development of website – www.cjpdonline.org,
» Publication - 'Humanitarian Action in the Undeclared War in Sri Lanka',
» Inaugural meeting of CJPD International Advisory Board,
» Engaged diaspora academics and professionals to develop and deliver CJPD work programme,
» Developed relationships with leading international and Sri Lankan NGO's including Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and INFORM, and CPA,
» Entered into partnerships with Transcend International, the International Movement Against All Forms of Discrimination and Racism (IMADR), Sri Lanka and the International League for the Rights and Liberation of Peoples (LIDLIP), Switzerland and INPACT, Sri Lanka.
